Many people who have been selling for a long time get stuck in their own ways. Sometimes these ways are not beneficial to their sales record and sometimes they are. For the salesperson who is wanting to always learn here are a few ideas that can help you find something new that might help you get a new sale. Read through these, find some that help you out and try them on the next time you try to make a sale.

Don’t waste time by talking to potential customers about aspects of your business that don’t interest them and their problem. Let them know that you really care by respecting their time.

Use questions. Ask open ended questions that let them do the talking. This will simultaneously make them feel important and let you know some information that may help you find out how to better serve their needs. It also can be used to get them involved in the presentation.

Find out their name early if you don’t know it. Repeat if when you first hear it and use it several times throughout the presentation.

Get a mentor. A mentor can listen to your sales pitch and give you tips on what you need to change. They can also tell you what things have worked best for them and worst for them. Many major sales based companies like Southwestern Company take those who have been through the program at least once and pair them up with several of the first years so that they can teach them.

Write down frequently asked questions and have answers already prepared. Know how much things cost, what they are made of, where they come from and affects your product has had on the profitability of other companies or the improvements it has made in people’s lives. Knowing that it has helped other people makes the person you are pitching to feel more comfortable with the product.

Speak like you are talking to an old friend. Don’t fake it, don’t raise the tone of your voice, be personable and nice but also a little casual. Most ordinary people don’t like to feel like they are being sold to but they do like to buy something that they think will help them out somewhere.

None of these tips take the place of going to sales training of any kind, whether it be for corporate wares or for personal sales. You should find at least two sales trainings that you can attend per year to stay on top of your game. Many places like Southwestern Company will do a sales training for a business if they have enough people willing to attend.
