socksNow doesn’t seem like a very smart time to start your own franchise business does it? Well, maybe it is and maybe it isn’t. If you can get a good deal on a franchise that will do well even in a recession then this could be a smart financial move to make. The key here is to stick to the basics. Sell things like socks and shoes, things that people are going to need regardless of how much money they do or don’t have.

Stores that sell basic items are managing to do okay in the recession. Socks are a great example of an item that sells well. Specialty sock stores and sock outlets are making money even in these tough economic times. That’s because this is an affordable item that everyone needs to buy. Plus there are some people who are giving up pricier things (like heat in their homes) and layering up with socks instead.

If you were to open a franchise store like this then you would want to offer both basic items and specialty items. Sell primarily mainstream socks and shoes for the average buyer. Also make some specialty items available (such as orthopedic shoes or diabetic crew socks). This way you appeal to as many customers as possible while still keeping your base item within buying range of most people.
